I bought a set of Konig Heliums and BF Goodrich Sport Comp 2s from Discount Tire because of their advertised Black Friday sale on Kinja Deals. Getting the mail-in rebate was a bit of a thorn (it’s my $175 and I want it now!) but, honestly, I was well overdue for a new set of tires and I wanted to see how black wheels looks on my two-tone Miata.
Yeah, the used Dunlop Z2 Star Spec tires are certainly done with maybe 1 autocross left in them. Look at the difference in meat on the Sport Comp 2 compared to the Z2*! I’ve already done a short, 15-mile drive on them and the ride is so incredible smoother and more quiet now! I’ll have to test these in the rain eventually but I imagine they’ll do a far greater job channeling water away from the center than the Z2s.
I do love the look of bronze wheels, especially on a car like the Miata, but black certain does a better job complementing the black hardtop, windshield frame, and black headlights.
The only downside to black wheels is that they look a bit bland with plain black tires. No worries, once SC stops being so humid and/or cold, then I’ll be whipping out my white oil-based marker and hitting these tires up with some eye-popping lettering!

I think it’s time to tastefully lower your Miata

I wish but I’d like to remain competitive in my autocross class for at least one more year. However, the means keeping the stock ride height unless I want to get my tush whooped by newer STR-preppared Miatas and S2ks.

Hmm, interesting but no thanks! I do plan on picking up a spare NB hood in the future for track days. It’ll have cut-outs for vents and be painted flat black to reduce sun glare.

Ooooh, that’s an idea when these wheels are scratched up enough to warrant that sort of modification!

Why do they need to be scratched up? If you dont like the look right now tape em up and hit em with some stripper.

I really, really, do not like the idea of tinkering with a brand-new set of wheels. Now I might try it on the bronze ones when I have the time but I certainly don’t want to mess up my new ones.

Looks good. I used to have a set of the bronze Heliums with Dunlop Direzza SSII’s on a black Miata. Really liked those wheels for the price.

Definitely not the first time I’ve seen those tires on Oppo - I only make particularly note because those are my summer tires on my Mini and I’m quite a fan. Those last tires you had seem like track tires or at least super aggressive (not very rain friendly) street tires.
Nice wheels too. A lot more restrained than may other Konigs.
Also +1000 on the two-tone Miata. Obviously reminds me of my mini (same colors and all) so you get an A in my book. Can’t go wrong with black wheels either though I’m sure the bronze looked great too.

The BFG Sport Comp 2 is AMAZING in the rain. I had some stupid fitting wheels when I had those tires so sadly my fenders ate them. But before that, they were spectacular at autocross (especially for a non-200TW tire). I did about 6 events with them, one of which was in down-pouring rain. I had no idea what to expect in the rain but they just gripped and gripped. They stayed true to the nature of predictable slight oversteer and no hydroplaning whatsoever. The Hoosier SM6 tires I replaced them with are hilariously more fun of course though lol. And my daily Direzza DZ102 are trash in the rain but for the price they are pretty darn good in the dry.
